Strategies for Successfully Implementing No Child Left Behind

Dr. Joanetta (Jodie) Ellis discusses the challenges she faced as a Texas school principal trying to implement the No Child Left Behind requirements. She suggests administrators struggling with this policy:

  • Involve all stakeholders in the decision-making process, including teachers, parents and students
  • Gather as much data as possible about the student population as well as available resources
  • Define expectations. Know exactly what is expected in regards to school performance
  • ALWAYS make sure decisions are student-driven

Dr. Joanetta (Jodie) Ellis retired after 31 years in public education as a teacher, curriculum specialist, assistant principal, and principal at both the elementary and secondary levels in a school district along the Texas border of Mexico. She is a full-time associate professor with American Public University System, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses as well as mentoring new adjunct faculty members.
